European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection
Michael McGrath took office as EU Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law, and Consumer Protection on December 1, 2024, joining the European Commission under the leadership of President Ursula von der Leyen.
As part of the College of Commissioners, he plays a key role in advancing the Commission’s overarching political priorities, as outlined in the 2024–2029 Political Guidelines.
In his portfolio, Commissioner McGrath is responsible for safeguarding the rule of law, defending democracy and fundamental rights, combating disinformation, enhancing criminal justice cooperation, and strengthening the rights of victims of crime. He also leads efforts to boost EU competitiveness by driving reforms in company and civil law.
